After playing a child's role in his father movie, Vijay signed his first male lead movie Naalaiya Theerppu. In 1996, Vijay became romantic film star after doing the Poove Unakkaga. Later, movies like Thirumalai, Ghilli, Thirupaachi, Sivakasi, Pokkiri, Kaavalan and Velayudham were the commercially biggest hits and Vijay got title of action hero for his tremendous performances in the movies.

In year 2012, Vijay's 3 idiots, remake Nanban alongside Jeeva, Srikanth and Ileana D’cruz released to housefulls. Nanban has one of blockbuster movie, which has supposed to have broken the first day box-office collection record of Bollywood Hindi movie 3 idiots of Aamir Khan. Now he join in 100 crore club by the movie Thuppaki.
